What is wisdom tooth extraction?

  • The wisdom teeth are the last teeth to grow out at the back of your mouth, usually between the ages of 17 and 25.
  • If the wisdom tooth is causing problems, the dentist will remove it gently after anaesthesia so that it no longer bothers you.
  • Even if it has not erupted from the gums, it is surgically removed by an oral surgeon under anaesthesia using special instruments.

Why is it important to remove wisdom teeth?

  • They don't always fit in your mouth - Sometimes there isn't enough room for wisdom teeth, so they grow in crooked, crowding other teeth or can't even break out of the gums.
  • They can cause problems - If a wisdom tooth grows in the wrong way, it can hurt, become inflamed or crowding out other teeth. It is better to have it removed.
  • Prevents cavities and infections - they grow backwards, so they are harder to clean and can break down and cause infection more easily.

What happens during wisdom tooth extraction?

  • Examination – including 3D X-rays if needed: First, we assess the position of the wisdom tooth in your mouth. We explain the procedure in detail and answer all your questions.
  • An anaesthetic is given: the injection site is first covered with a gel so that the injection does not hurt. The tooth extraction is done under local anaesthetic so you won't feel any pain.
  • Removing the wisdom tooth: The dentist will gently but firmly remove the tooth. Sometimes you may have to cut the tooth into smaller pieces if it is harder to get out - this is perfectly normal.
  • Treating the wound: once the tooth is out, we clean the site and, if necessary, stitch it up with a few stitches. These stitches will usually dissolve on their own.
  • We help you recover: we tell you what you can and cannot do in the next few days. You'll also get written advice. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us afterwards.
